California casinos projected to earn $5B

MAY 17, 2001 California's new gambling commission is projecting tribes in the state will earn more than $5 billion in the coming year and may soon overtake Nevada as the nation's number one gaming market. Nevada casinos last year reported a net win of $9.63 billion. Following was Atlantic City with $4.3 billion over the last year, a market California would overtake if the project numbers are correct. To arrive at the figure, the commission multiplied the projected daily earnings of each slot machine in operation by 45,206, the limit imposed by Governor Gray Davis. Tribal slot machines are said to be earning an average of $300 a day. Get the Story:
