MAY 18, 2000

Senator Christopher Bond (R Mo) will introduce legislation this week that will prevent the Housing and Urban Development from granting federal money to tribal-owned and run smokeshops.

Bond has pushed for HUD to end funding ever since he discovered that the department awarded grants to the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, the Kaw Nation of Oklahoma, the Chickasaw and Muscogee Nation, and the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony in Nevada. The Choctaw and Kaw say the grants aren't meant for smokeshops but for convenience stores.

HUD agreed last summer to stop funds from going to smokeshops but the decision was not legally binding.
