With the possibilty of two tribes receiving federal recognition, can the state of Connecticut handle any more casinos?

Two tribes already operate successful casinos in Southeastern Connecticut. The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation owns Foxwoods Resort Casino and the Mohegan Tribe owns the Mohegan Sun Casino.

Officials from both casinos believe more growth is possible while a University of Connecticut economics professor questions whether additional casinos would take away from the business of Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun.

Recent reports from both casinos indicate increases in slots revenue, of which 25 percent goes to the state.

Two tribes in Connecticut, the Eastern Pequot and Paucatuck Eastern Pequot have received preliminary federal recognition. Neither tribe has officially announced plans to open a casino but the Paucatuck tribe count gaming mogul Donald Trump as their primary economic backer.

Golf resort developer David Rosow is the backer for the Eastern Pequot. He has no experience in gaming but has said he would work with the tribe to develop a possible resort destination which may include a casino.

Even if the two tribe's do not open casinos, the state would already have its hands full with Indian affairs. Governor John Rowland is seeking Indian law and tribal sovereignty experts to help his administration deal with the state's relationships with tribes.
