Tribe's purchases said slated for casino

MAY 21, 2001 An attorney for the Confederated Warm Springs Tribes of Oregon says the tribes' recent land purchases are good indicators of a renewed plan to build a casino in the Hood River area. The tribal council in February voted to consider looking at a casino east of the river. Their $1.5 million purchase of 202 acres is another step in the plan. The tribes would have to get the land taken into trust by the federal government and receive the support of Governor John Kitzhaber, who in 1998 reject a different proposal. Residents in the Hood River area oppose casino plans. A regional Bureau of Indian Affairs official says he expects the council to submit its application within the next two weeks. Get the Story:
