Tribe pushes casino proposal again

MAY 22, 2001 After weeks of discussion but no action, the Eastern Pequot Tribe and its financial backer on Monday asked the New London councilors to make a move on a proposed casino in the city. The tribe in April proposed the development at the Adm. Harold E. Shear State Pier. The tribe says a 228,000-square-foot casino would bring jobs to the city but is also offering $7.5 million for the pier and $6.5 million in annual payments. The tribe has yet to receive final federal recognition. A decision is due in December, but regardless of the outcome, it could be challenged in court and take longer to resolve. Get the Story:
