Foes of gaming on Nebraska's reservations were the top spending lobbyists during the recent legislative session, according to reports of the Nebraska Legislature.

Nebraskans Against Expanded Gambling, spent $41,883 to fight legislation that would have expanded gaming for the state's tribes. The Santee Sioux and the Winnebago spent a total of $4,200 during the last session.

Gaming is illegal in Nebraska except for lottery, keno, horse racing, pickle cards, bingo, raffles and a multistate Powerball lottery.

In defiance of court orders by the state and the US, as well as the provisions of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA), the Santee Sioux have attempted to keep their Ohiya casino open. The tribe does not have a gaming compact with the state.

Last year, the federal government froze the tribe's bank accounts for refusal to pay fines incurred for operating their casino.
