MAY 31, 2001

A group called Citizens for Tax Justice on Wednesday released a report saying that millions of low-income Americans won't receive rebate checks from the $1.35 trillion dollar tax cut passed by Congress last week will.

The group says Americans in the bottom 60 percent of income levels -- more than 32 million individuals and families -- will receive no rebate. The number is a considerable percentage of the 95 million Americans the Bush administration says will benefit from a retroactive rebate.

The Department of Treasury says rebate checks can be expected in a few months.
