JUNE 14, 2000

On Tuesday, the Lac du Flambeau band of Lake Superior Ojibwe announced the abandonement of their casino proposal in the village of Ashwaubenon. A referendum on the proposal was to be held July 11 but the tribe said they believe they did not have the support necessary to open a casino there. The tribe has expressed interest in the towns of Lawrence and Exeter.

The tribe had first received positive support from the Ashwaubenon village board, but the board tabled the proposal after hearing some local residents voice opposition. But other residents who wanted a vote on the plan gathered enough signatures to call for a referendum.
