JUNE 21, 2000

The latest offer of more money to the state by the Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island apparently did not impress key lawmakers. The House Finance Committee voted 10-7 against placing the tribe's referendum bill on the November ballot.

The tribe needs state approval in order to open a casino. The last time the issue went before voters, the tribe was rejected by five communities.

The sponsor of the bill says he might use a rare House rule to revive the bill.

Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas said the tribe will never give up its battle go game.
