Tribe begins power project

JUNE 21, 2000 The Torres-Martinez Desert Cahuilla tribe will be hosting a $275 mlllion power plant that could serve up to 600,000 southern Californians. The Calpine Corporation of San Jose has finalized its plans with the tribe for a land lease and sale of water to the plant. The partnership marks the first economic venture of the isolated, non-gaming tribe. A bill that would grant the tribe $14 million for lost land and the ability to buy land elsewhere for a casino has been introduced by Representative Mary Bono. The Cabazon Band of Mission Indians are opposing the bill, saying they weren't made aware of the tribe's casino plans. Get the Story:
