McCain calls for gaming hearing

JUNE 21, 2001 Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Wednesday wrote a letter to Indian Affairs Committee Chairman Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii), calling for a hearing on general Indian gaming issues. The call is worrying some Arizona tribes, says David LaSarte, executive director of the Arizona Indian Gaming Association. LaSarte says hearings could weaken tribal sovereignty. McCain is a member of the committee as well and a primary sponsor of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA). A spokesperson for McCain again refuted a Boston Globe story which claimed the Senator wanted an investigation into the Mohegan Tribe's casino investment deal. The Arizona Gaming Commission has released a study which shows that Indian casinos contribute $468 million to the state's economy. Get the Story:
