JUNE 7, 2000 Montie Deer, Creek Nation, chairman of the National Indian Gaming Commission, told attendees of the Oklahoma Supreme Court's Sovereignty Symposium that Indian gaming has grown to an $8.2 billion business. Deer said currently there are 195 tribes offering gaming at 320 locations in 28 states, with an additional 20 from California, where new compacts were recently approved. Deer made note of the positive economic benefits of gaming, citing improvements in education, health services, homes, and employment for tribes. The 13th Annual Sovereignty Symposium ends today. Kiowa author N. Scott Momaday will speak at the closing luncheon. Get the Story:
