Homeowners in the town of Union, Connecticut, have received offers to sell their homes to an anonymous buyer, ostensibly the Nipmuc Nation of Massachusetts.

Homeowners have been offered prices well above market value, according to a local real estate dealer. But they wouldn't be guaranteed of home purchase until May 2005.

The tribe isn't commenting on the alleged solicitation. The tribe is alleged to be eyeing the land to open a casino in Connecticut rather than Massachusetts.

One band of the Nipmuc Nation received preliminary recognition in January. But the decision is on hold pending review by the Bush administration.
