TUESDAY, JULY 24, 2001

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee will hold an oversight hearing tomorrow on the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) of 1988.

The hearing was called at the request of Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.). But he disputed media reports which suggested he wanted to focus on a management deal the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut made with outside investors.

McCain wrote a letter to the tribe to explain his reasons for holding the hearing.

Among the witnesses expected to testify are National Indian Gaming Association Chairman Ernie Stevens Jr., Bureau of Indian Affairs Deputy Commissioner Sharon Blackwell and a representative from the National Indian Gaming Commission.
