The Gay Head Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts on Thursday released a study authored by a major accounting firm that claims an Indian casino will bring benefits to the state.

A single casino in southeastern Massachusetts would bring 9,000 new jobs, raise millions in tax revenues and perform as well as the nearest competitor in Connecticut, says the report. Deloitte and Touche did the economic study for the tribe.

The tribe has sought gaming since being recognized in 1987 but have failed repeatedly. The tribe, who makes its home on the island of Martha's Vineyard, is the only federally recognized one in Massachusetts.

The Nipmuc Nation of Massachusetts, whose status is on review at the Bureau of Indian Affairs, pledged support for the Wampanoag. The Nipmuc tribe wants to open its own casino, possibly near the Massachusetts border in Connecticut.
