Cherokee Nation tribal members in Oklahoma are being warned about placing fake tribal car tags on their vehicles.

Cherokee County district attorney says tribal members should not place the tags on their cars because they are illegal. Cars could be impounded, said Dianne Barker-Harrold.

A group which claims to be the true successor of the Cherokee Nation issued the fake tags.

The federally recognized Cherkee Nation is getting ready to issue their own, legal tags. A number of tribes in Oklahoma do the same but the Cherokee Nation is the largest to have them.
