AUGUST 1, 2000

A casino proposed by the Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe has been accepted by the Lafayette County Board in Wisconsin.

The tribe has shopped around the idea to several municipalities in the area, withdrawing the proposal in at least one community. But the tribe hasn't yet settled on an exact location

Citing a budget deficit, the Board approved the proposal 15-1. The county would be paid $4 million annually for 20 years in order to offset the lack of taxes on Indian trust land.

The casino still would need approval by the state and the Department of Interior.
