MONDAY, AUGUST 13, 2001 Due to his support for tribal and gaming issues, California Assemblyman Tony Cardenas is one of the largest recipients of campaign contributions from tribes. When he was running for secretary of state, he raised $384,150, most of it coming from tribes. He later dropped his campaign. Cardenas is now running for Los Angeles City Council. His tribal connections may increase his coffers but may also affect voters negatively. During this year's mayoral race, tribal contributions led to widespread accusations of unethical behavior.
