The tribes on the Fort Peck Reservation in Montana on Wednesday filed a lawsuit seeking $3 million in back taxes from a pipeline company.

The tribe says Northern Border Pipeline Co. signed a contract in 1981 agreeing to pay the taxes. Negotiations on the issue have failed, says the tribe, so the suit was filed in tribal court.

Northern Border is operated by a subsidiary of Enron. The company owns a natural gas pipeline and compression station on the reservation.
