You might be a winner...

AUGUST 23, 2000

"You may already be a winner" is a familiar slogan to anyone who gets mail (some might say its junk mail) from Publishers Clearing House.

But many consumers never got any money, instead subscribing to countless magazines in hopes of winning the big jackpot.

Consumers, however, might now be getting some money out of the company now that 23 states and the District of Columbia have settled a lawsuit with the magazine marketer. The agreement calls for the company to pay $18.3 million in restitution and $5 million in fees for its deceptive marketing promotions.

If you bought more than $2,500 worth of magazines from 1997 through 1999, you can be eligible to receive a refund. Contact your state's attorney generals office for more information.

The agreement affects consumers in Alaska, Alabama, California, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wyoming and the District of Columbia.
