AUGUST 28, 2000

The San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe of Arizona have taken out an option on 54 acres of land near Flagstaff, Arizona, and the tribe's developer says future revenues from a casino there would be used to pay off land it buys for the tribe.

The tribe, which has less than 200 members, received federal recognition in 1990. Most of the tribe lives within the boundaries of the Navajo Nation.
