The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska is hoping to start a ferry service across the Missouri River, which would be the first in nearly 20 years.

The tribe has received a $771,000 federal commuter transit grant and is seeking additional funds for the $2.2 million needed in startup funds. The tribe hopes to have terminals on the Nebraska and Iowa sides of the river and two ferry boats.

The ferry would reduce the time it takes for tribal members and others to travel from the Nebraska reservation to the tribe's casino in Iowa. Up to nine vehicles could be carried on a ferry.
