THURSDAY, AUGUST 9, 2001

Eleven tribes in have made an agreement with New Mexico Attorney General Patricia Madrid on casino payments they owe the state.

The tribes are expect to sign off on the deal today in Santa Fe. Only Pojoaque Pueblo and the Mescalero Apache Nation are refusing, because they believe the 16 percent rate they are supposed to be is too high.

The tribes are estimated to owe the state $100 million in revenue sharing fees under compacts signed in 1997. The State Legislature this year approved a new compact on the condition tribes and Madrid settle their differences over the payments.
