State eyes tribes' profits
SEPTEMBER 15, 2000

The state of Arizona is proposing that its 15 gaming tribes contribute 7 percent of their net income to a state fund that would be used for mental illness, Indian health care, statewide education and improvements to emergency response services.

No one know exactly how much money the tribes in the state make. Only the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation has publicly acknowledged annual revenues of $200 million.

The original compacts the state made with tribes in 1993 expire in 2003. At the time, the state didn't ask for a share of the casino revenues.
