Indian Country Today closes S.D. office

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2001 The Oneida Nation of New York has shut down the Rapid City, South Dakota, office of Indian Country Today, the nation's largest print newspaper for Indian news. Managing editor David Melmer cited economic problems for the shutdown. The office was cleaned out this weekend. Some workers were given a relocation offer. Others were fired. Standing Stone Media, a company owned by the Oneida Nation, bought ICT from its previous owner Tim Giago in 1998. Giago reported largely on Plains tribes, a focus some felt was lost when the Oneida Nation took over. Giago eventually went on to start a new paper. Get the Story:
