An economic stimulus bill that is the subject of much debate in the Senate contains a provision to provide bison meat for school, tribal and other government programs.

Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.), chairman of the Budget Committee, has a provision requiring the U.S. Department of Agriculture to spend $220 on various home-grown and home-produced products including bison meat. The meat would go to low-price school lunch programs and tribal food programs, for instance.

The North America Bison Cooperative is supporting the provision.
