FRIDAY, MARCH 1, 2002

A hearing was held on Thursday to discuss whether publicly traded corporations should own card clubs in California.

Anthony Miranda of the California Nations Indian Gaming Association said no, saying the clubs could gain unfair advantages. Card club representatives in turn said it is tribes who have the upper hand.

Cheryl Schmit, director of Stand Up for California, an anti-gaming group, said her people are split on the issue.
