Pequot lawsuit bill resisted

Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.), an anti-casino advocate and federal recognition critic, is opposing an effort to pay three Connecticut towns for their failed lawsuit.

A spokesperson told The New London Day that Wolf sympathizes. "But it's very unlikely that any money will be available for this because it would be like giving the locality money to sue the federal government," the paper quoted Dan Scandling as saying.

Wolf's comments come in response to a request by Rep. Rob Simmons (R-Conn.) to repay $1.2 million in legal fees to the towns of Ledyard, North Stonington and Preston. The towns have been fighting a land-into-trust petition by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation.

The lawsuit was dismissed when the tribe withdrew its application.
