FRIDAY, MAY 3, 2002

The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut has more than $1 billion in debt due to the expansion of its casino.

The expansion has been successful, according to numbers the tribe's gaming authority released on Thursday. Daily visits are 35,000; up from 10,000 prior to the expansion.

The debt has cut profits in half, however. For the first three months of the year, profit was $20 million, down from $41.5 the same period in 2001.
