South Dakota lawmakers are being urged not to split the state's majority Indian district and dilute Native voting power.

Currently, there is one district encompassing the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation and the South Dakota portion of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. The district has a Native representative, Thomas Van Norman, a Democrat who was elected in 2000.

Under current population figures, the district would have a 78 percent Native population. But if the district is split up, as has been suggested, the Native population will fall to 59 percent.
