The Alaska Democratic Party is criticizing Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska) for using his public office to help his run for governor

The party says Murkowski can't allow his staff to participate in his political run. By putting the names and numbers of his aides on a press release announcing his move, the party says Murkowski violated Senate ethics rules and federal law.

Murkowski said he would not comment on the issue unless a formal complaint is filed. His supporters and staff, however, say nothing was wrong with the action.

Murkowski is seen as the front-runner for the 2002 gubernatorial election. He is an ardent supporter of drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
