The voting power of Alaska Native is not diluted by Alaska's proposed 2001 redistricting plan, the Department of Justice has concluded.

That doesn't mean the plan will be implemented right now. A lawsuit challenging it will now proceed.

The Aleut Corp. is opposing the plan because it says voting power of Aleuts is diluted. The plan puts Aleut commercial fishermen in a new Senate district with Yup'ik subsistence communities, groups the corporation says have no historical or political ties.

The plan has four House districts and two Senate districts with a majority Native population. It also has two House districts and one Senate district with at least 35 percent Native population.
