Benedict campaign runs into problems

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2001

Jeff Benedict, author of a controversial book about the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, has run into problems over a canceled fundraiser.

The wording on an invitation sent to the event maybe have violated federal election laws. Benedict, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for Connecticut's 2nd Congressional district, says his campaign has already contacted the Federal Elections Commission to discuss the issue.

Benedict authored "Without Reservation," which says the Mashantucket Tribe is not a real Indian tribe. In an opinion piece published in a local paper, he advocated terminating the tribe.

The 2nd district seat is held by Rep. Rob Simmons, a Republican elected by a slight margin last year. Simmons is currently mediating talks between the tribe and three local towns over trust land.
