MONDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2001

Former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge was sworn in today to head the new Office of Homeland Security, a Cabinet-level position created by President Bush in response of September 11's terrorist attacks.

Ridge's job will be broad, as he is focused on strengthening American security across various federal agencies and departments. He promised today he will involve "every American."

Some members of Congress have warned that Ridge may not have the necessary mandate to make changes.
