JANUARY 12, 2001

Janet Reno, the first female Attorney General, on Thursday said goodbye to Justice Department employees and others who gathered to bid her farewell.

In her speech, she told the Department to be less secretive. She also noted that while her and FBI Director Louis J. Freeh disagreed on a number of issues, she considers him a great law enforcer. Freeh also praised Reno and gave her a kiss.

Reno was the longest-serving AG in the 20th century. She says she will finally make the cross-country trip she has wanted to take for several years.
