Will Gorton be part of Bush team?

Now that George W. Bush has proclaimed himself President, all eyes are on the Texas Governor to see whom he will name to his Cabinet.

And although Senator Slade Gorton (R-Wash) appears to have been defeated by Democrat Maria Cantwell, he might not be named as Secretary of Interior. The suggestion emerged from the Bush camp in recent months, much to the terror of tribal leaders.

Instead, Montana Governor Marc Racicot has been suggested to take the post, or possibly that of Attorney General, a job currently held by Janet Reno. Unknown to just about everyone except tribes in the state, Racicot has come to national prominence due to his frequent media apperances criticizing Vice President Al Gore's election challenges.

As for the rest of Bush's team, influences from his father are clear. Retired General Colin Powell and foreign policy adviser Condoleeza Rice, both African-Americans, are in the running for top posts.

Don't count on Senator John McCain of Arizona to be a key player, however, even if asked. While in Arizona on Tuesday, he said he didn't want to be part of Bush's administration, but that he supports Bush's call on Gore to concede the election.
