JANUARY 23, 2001

Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) on Monday said he will vote against confirming John Ashcroft for Attorney General.

Democrats Barbara Boxer of California and Jon Corzine of New Jersey also said they will oppose him. The Senate Committee on the Judiciary is expected to vote on whether or not to recommend his nomination this week before the full Senate considers the issue.

The Committee is still reviewing some of Ashcroft's speeches, writings, and other information. In some of them, he complained about judges who he said imposed their own will over that of citizens in issues such as school desegregation, abortion, and affirmative action.
