The New York Times today reports that Secretary of Interior nominee Gale Norton made taped telephone calls to voters in Colorado last November warning them of a "smear campaign" against Republicans by Democrats and outside interests.

Since Norton only identified herself as former Attorney General and not as a member of the Republican Party, some Democrats are saying the calls were inappropriate. Callers were told to call a number, which directed them to the state Republican Party, if they received "smear mail."
