State GOP gets new leader

JANUARY 29, 2001

The troubled Washington State Republican Party elected Chris Vance as its new chairman, replacing controversial former leader Don Benton.

Party members blamed Benton for the loss of Slade Gorton to Senator Maria Cantwell and for the loss of other GOP candidates. They said Benton told them the party had no money but it later surfaced that Benton may have let as much as $1 million go unspent.

A Seattle Post-Intelligencer analysis show that Democrats last year spent more on the campaign than Republicans, with the exception of the race for Governor in which Democrat incumbent beat challenger John Carlson.
