JANUARY 31, 2001

John Ashcroft, President George W. Bush's controversial pick to head the Justice Department and the only nominee not yet confirmed by the Senate, was approved by a 10-8 vote by the Senate Committee on the Judiciary.

All Republicans voted to approve Ashcroft's nomination with Senator Russ Feingold being the only Democrat to do the same. Ashcroft will be debated on the Senate floor today and is expected to be confirmed despite opposition from many Democrats.
