Bush: We won't close AIDS race offices

FEBRUARY 8, 2001

President George W. Bush on Wednesday said his administration is dedicated to maintaining special offices his predecessor devoted to AIDS and race relations.

But White House staffers acknowledged the Office of National AIDS Policy and the Office on the President's Initiative for One America will be slimmed down. The Washington Post today reports that calls to both offices went unanswered, apparently since no one was there to pick up the phones.

Chief of Staff Andrew H. Card Jr. had told USA Today this week the offices would be closed but yesterday White House officials said he made a mistake.
