MARCH 21, 2001

The Indian population in Connecticut has risen by 50 percent over the past decade, according to the Census 2000 figures released on Tuesday.

Approximately 9600 people identified themselves solely as Indian in the 2000 census, up from 6700 in 1990. Around 14,000 people identified themselves as being part American Indian. No data was collected on this category in 1990.

There are two federally recognized tribes in the state: the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation with approximately 650 members and the Mohegan Tribe with about 1,100. There are three state-recognized reservations for the Eastern Pequot / Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe, the Golden Hill Paugausett Tribe, and the Schagticoke Tribe.
