Independent political ads would be limited

MARCH 27, 2001

In a move which could affect Indian organizations, the Senate on Monday voted 51-46 to amend the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform bill to ban late-campaign advertising by independent advocacy groups.

The amendment, proposed by Paul Wellstone (D-Minn.), would extend proposed limits on corporations and unions to independent groups. They would be banned from placing ads targeting a specific federal candidate within 60 days of a general election or 30 days of a primary.

The proposal would presumably affect groups like the Sierra Club or the First Americans Education Project (FAEP), who targeted former Senator Slade Gorton (R) of Washington for defeat.

The amendment was opposed by John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Russ Feingold (D-Wis.).
