MARCH 29, 2001 The Seattle Post-Intelligencer takes on the difficult task of tracking migration of the state's American Indian population. In its analysis, the paper notes that an exodus of Indians and Alaska Natives occurred in King County, the state's most populous. The county's Indian population fell 8 percent. The Indian population in Seattle, the state's largest city also located in King County, fell by 22 percent. The paper also compares 1990 reservation populations to 2000. Its 2000 numbers include American Indians who identified themselves as more than one race. The 1990 Census did not allow respondents to choose more than one. The racial combination of American Indian and White was the largest multiple race category chosen by Washington residents. Get the Story:
