Norton says budget is compassionate

APRIL 18, 2001 Being a compassionate conservative is one of Secretary of Interior's mantras and the former Colorado Attorney General says her budget is an example. Environmentalists, however, are criticizing the Department of Interior's proposed fiscal year 2002 budget for its cuts. Overall, the department is seeing a 3.5 percent reduction. Norton says the 2001 budget, which included historic increases for Indian programs, was a "spike" that couldn't be sustained. Get the Story:
