People line up to be Indian

APRIL 9, 2001

The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma is just one of many tribes around the country who have seen increased interest in people claiming Indian heritage.

The results from the Census 2000, in which respondents were allowed to identify themselves as belonging to more than one race, reflects this growing interest. About seven million Americans, or 2.4 percent of the population, did just that.

According to the Census 2000, 1.6 million Americans consider themselves to have some American Indian or Alaska Native heritage. About 2.5 million consider themselves AI/AN alone, or 0.9 percent of the population.

Combining both numbers gives rise to 4.1 million American Indians, or 1.5 percent of the population.
