MAY 15, 2001 In a speech to the American Law Institute, Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist said proposed legislation to ban "judicial junkets" is anti-American. Judicial junkets are seminars that private groups hold for federal judges. Judges get free room, board, and other perks at tourist and spa locations, which critics allege influences their decisions. Sensators John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) and Russell D. Feingold (D-Wis.) introduced a bill to ban then but it died last Congressional session. The pair plan on pushing it again. Get the Story:
