The populations on Montana's reservations and counties encompassing them are predominantly young, according to an Associated Press analysis of Census 2000 data.

The median age for the state last year was 37.5 years. Seven counties with reservations had an average median age four years younger while six of the 10 counties with median ages lower than the state were tied to reservations.

The median age in Big Horn County, home to the Crow Reservation, for example, was 29.8 years.

Reservation or near-reservation communities had low median ages as well, such as Boneau with a median age of 13 years. Of the 25 youngest populations, 17 were on or near reservations.
