Hopi Tribe wants to keep own district
JUNE 20, 2001

The Hopi Tribe of Arizona is asking the state Independent Redistricting Commission to make sure the tribe has its own political district separate from the neighboring Navajo Nation.

A new map the commission is considering puts the tribes in the same district. It also splits the Navajo Nation into two districts.

Hopi Chairman Wayne Taylor says the tribes' priorities and views are different so they need separate districts. The Navajo Nation is much larger, in population, than the Hopi Tribe.
