Jeffords switch breaks up 'mop-tops'

JUNE 27, 2001

Since leaving the Republican party, Jim Jeffords (I-Vt.) has been the subject of threats, criticism, and ridicule for putting the Senate in control of the Democrats.

But that's not the worst of it.

In the biggest breakup to hit the music world since Cher and Sonny parted ways, the Singing Senators are apparenly no more.

The group was made up of Larry Craig (lead from Idaho), Trent Lott (bass from Mississippi), former Senator John Ashcroft (baritone and now Attorney General), and Jeffords (tenor). Yet while Ashcroft wants to get back together, Craig and Lott aren't so excited about regrouping.
